The Components of Pandora's Box

The goal of Pandora’s Box is to teach medical professionals concrete skills to help them screen for and address sensitive family problems in their young patients, including parental substance abuse, child-witnessed domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and adolescent substance abuse.  The program is comprised of several tools that can be incorporated to enhance practitioner knowledge - either through an existing curriculum on sensitive issues, or as a guide for adding a new component to a curriculum that does not currently address these issues, or as a tool for staff training in a variety of clinical settings.   Two of these tools are designed for use by all medical professionals, and are included in this section.  They include:

¨      An on-line manual entitled Opening and Closing Pandora’s Box – Discussing Sensitive Topics with Children and their Families.  This manual discusses:

Developmentally Appropriate Interviews, Prenatal through Adolescence

¨      A comprehensive referral listing.   There is an immense amount of information available to medical professionals on the internet to assist them in finding help for their patients and their families.  Pandora’s Box assists physicians by condensing this information into a comprehensive listing of referral information on sensitive family issues.  The listing includes links to nationwide drug treatment referral databases, crisis hotlines, and statewide coalitions that can assist in finding local referrals, broken down by topic.

Also included in this section of the website is information on making effective social services referrals, as well as resources for patients and their families.  The Pandora’s Box program also provides information for chief residents, residency directors, supervisors, and educators on incorporating information on sensitive family issues into the curriculum or workplace.
