Pandora's Box
Pandora's Box provides several tools for use in educating medical professionals. As a residency director, chief resident, professor, supervisor, or other medical educator, you know best the needs of your specific programs or clinic. The following are some suggestions to help you decide which components will work best for you. On-line Manual The website includes an on-line manual (in a printable, PDF format) that teaches residents how to uncover and address sensitive family issues in a clinical setting. The manual also covers the effects of these problems on children and adolescents. Individuals should be encouraged to review the content of the manual, and share it with other medical professionals with whom they work (in continuity clinics, etc.). As the manual is available on-line, it is also accessible for reference when residents, staff, and students are working in community clinics. Power Point Presentations Pandora's Box provides Power Point presentations for use by chief residents, professors, and other professionals who educate health care providers. The presentations are designed for use in the classroom, in morning meetings and noon conferences, in continuity clinic lectures, in staff meetings, or other forums. The presentations include both presentation slides and background notes for the speaker. (Please note, when you view the presentation on the internet, only the slides will show. However, saving the presentation to your computer will allow you to view the complete presentation.) Several presentations are provided to give you flexibility in addressing these issues. Referral Listing There is a wealth of referral information available on the internet on sensitive family issues. To make this information readily accessible, Pandora's Box provides a centralized listing of on-line resources for referrals and additional information. Encourage students and staff to bookmark this page on their computers to rapidly access referral resources on substance abuse treatment, child abuse and neglect (including state-by-state information on mandated reporting), and domestic violence hotlines. Other Resources Pandora's Box provides regular news updates on sensitive issues, and offers an abstract listing of related research. The site also provides two resource listings. The first is for medical professionals who are interested in learning more about sensitive family issues; the second provides resources that can be shared with patients and their families as they begin to address these issues. Pandora's Box also provides a listing of professional organization policy statements related to sensitive family issues. Finally, the Children of Alcoholics Foundation website, of which Pandora's Box is a component, provides information on a variety of topics related to children of alcoholics and substance abusers.
