Running On Sunshine: Solar Power at the SMART Center
Earlier this year, COAF took an important step toward a more sustainable future at the SMART Center in Debed, Lori. With the installation of a new solar energy system, the campus began producing its own clean power—an investment that has been quietly making a difference ever since.
Completed at the end of 2024, the 179 kW solar installation now generates 258,000 kWh of clean energy each year, covering more than 60% of the SMART Center’s energy needs. The result is a campus that is not only more environmentally responsible, but also more resilient and self-sustaining.
Savings That Go Back to Students
Throughout the year, the solar system has helped reduce operating costs by an estimated $38,250—annual savings that can be redirected toward what matters most: educational programs, student support, and expanded opportunity for children across rural Armenia.
At the same time, the system offsets 192 metric tons of CO₂ each year, reinforcing COAF’s commitment to environmental stewardship and setting an example for sustainable educational campuses in the region.
Learning Powered by Real-World Experience
For SMART students, the solar panels are more than infrastructure—they’re part of the learning experience. The installation has become a hands-on teaching tool, allowing students to explore renewable energy up close and connect classroom lessons to real-world solutions.
Through a collaboration with Optimum Energy Group, the project has also opened the door to new renewable energy learning opportunities, inspiring curiosity, responsibility, and forward-thinking skills in the next generation.
